As Shania Twain embarks on her farewell tour, stopping at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, it’s hard not to think of her life as one long country song.
There’s the grinding poverty of her rural Canadian childhood; her loss, at 22, of both parents in a car crash; the illness that silenced her singing voice; and the betrayal that broke her heart — when her husband/manager ran off with her best friend.
With Billy Ocean's Tear Down These Walls, Lange also moved into R&B, scoring a smash single with "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car." A long layoff preceded the release of his next production, Bryan Adams' 1991 LP Waking Up the Neighbours, which generated the mega-hit "Everything I Do I Do It for You." He then hit a snag with Def Leppard's disappointing 1992 effort, Adrenalize, before returning to hitmaking form a year later with Michael Bolton's The One Thing.I may not be a fan of all the bands he has worked with but I still dig the fact that he can work with a rap group, a thrash metal band and a legendary country singer. I've listened to Meatllicasince 1984 (I was 14) and I have grown up just as they have. I know, I used to play Metal and after years of doing it got to be the same thing riff an E or die or now a days tune down or die. I didn't stop listening to Metallica because of this so calledcomercialism I stop listening because I got bored with it.It takes vision and an open mind to be able to do that and he's got it. It once was all about Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica and now it's the Dave Mathews Band, Rage, The Roots and just about anything that grooves. He reunited with the group a year later for the classic Back in Black, followed in 1981 by Foreigner's blockbuster smash 4, which earned him a Grammy nomination as Producer of the Year. That same year, he also helmed Def Leppard's High 'n' Dry, his first collaboration with the band, and resumed the partnership for 1983's Pyromania, which officially broke the band in America.
