Recent research underscores that human activity has significant and yet-to-be quantified impacts on surface processes and hydrology. In sediment dating, the age of most interest is usually the time elapsed since grains of quartz or feldspar were last exposed to sunlight, as the energy of the sun's rays is sufficient to evict electrons from their light-sensitive traps.Despite the fact that quartz is most nominally pure Si O, the mineral forms in several different geological settings, i.e.under different pressure and temperature conditions. The luminescence emitted from quartz is complex and shows a variety of different components with diverse physical properties.Outlined below are recent and future research directions.
